(Kakabeak). Red variety. A woody legumey shrub native to the North Island, with striking clusters of red flowers. These flowers resemble the beak of a New Zealand parrot, and the plant is also known as Parrot's Beak, Parrot's Bill and Lobster Claw. An endangered species in the wild. Widely grown as a garden plant. Grows to about 2 metre high with spreading branches producing leaf stalks up to 15 cm long bearing several pairs of small leaflets. RARE SPECIMEN PLANT. 1.5 litre pots. To 45 cms. An exotic hybrid with huge, lobed umbrella shaped leaves which are splashed and spotted. Unusual maroon red flowers are followed by fleshy fruits (May apples). Woodland, rich moist soil. Full shade. Mainly winter dormant, may retain some leaves if given more protection.
