Low growing and compact. Masses of pretty, lilac blue flowers spring to summer. Long flowering. Suits rockery or use as edging. Useful for pots and hanging baskets. Best in sun, may tolerate some shade.

Seldom seen in New Zealand. 30-60 cms in height. The 1-1.5 in flowers grow in whorls on an inflorescence about 30 cms long. The name castanea, which means 'chestnut coloured', refers to the purplish-maroon flowers. Summer flowering. Sun. Winter dormant.
An unanmed Salvia but think it is Salvia jamensis - a good red colour. Height 70 cms. Sun. Good drainage.
